Two more weeks

How time flies! This may (or may not!) be the last post of the school year. We have two more weeks to complete before summer vacation will be upon us.

The grade 3's completed their district math assessments on Thursday. They worked hard and hopefully this will be reflected in the results!

The grade 3 students will be participating in a Science Camp that is hosted by Mr. Fequet's Grade 5 students one morning this week. They will pass through a variety of science centres which I'm sure they will enjoy greatly!

On June 16th, all the grade 3 classes will be taking a field trip around Saint John - particularly, The Loyalist Burial ground, Loyalist House, Market Square, Martello Tower and Reversing Falls. If you are interested in participating as a parent volunteer, please let me know and I will be in contact.

The last day of school is on June 20th. The district has formally announced that it will be a half day. More information will follow.

Website for Math Facts

Just discovered a great way to practice addition math facts that involves strategy and concentration. The object of the game is to move one of the numbers on the game board to that it is side by side with another number(s). When all the numbers are added together, they equal to 10 (or later on 12).

The game is located: http://www.reflexive.com/index.php?PAGE=WebGamePlay&WGID=87

Another quick note: their last booklet of mental math was sent home with them on Thursday. I asked them to get it corrected and signed for Wednesday.

Hope everyone had a great day!

Great Math Websites

Some wonderful math sites that we've enjoyed at one time or another in the classroom. Great way for the grade 3's to reinforce some of the math skills we've been building in school:

Task for the Weekend

Hi Everyone,

Just a little note about the task that the students have to do for Math this weekend. We have asked them to flip a coin 20 times and count the number of heads or tails they flip. We had a vote and are hoping to graph the results sometime this week.

Enjoy the long weekend!

Update!

Hello grade 3 parents!

Sorry for the long delay between posts - it has been a hectic time of year. Meetings upon meetings!

A letter went home last week from Ms. Lyndsay Ingersoll. She will be with us each Wednesday for the rest of the year. She will be doing the main instructing on Wednesdays while I will be pulling students for small group and individual instruction time. Ms. Ingersoll will also be teaching Science to the grade 3 class and will be the one assigning their Science grade for the last report card of the year. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Other news: Our boxes for Afghanistan have been packed and sent out. They are enroute to Gagetown where they will be delivered to Belleville. We collected 10 boxes crammed with clothes, toys, stationary and hygiene products for the children! What an outpouring of love!

The spelling the children received today will be the last for the year. We will be putting a larger emphasis on Math from now until June. They will still be receiving reading or writing homework, but additional math will be sent home. Please continue to practice math facts with them daily.

Finally, the children have been asked to bring home their mental math to be signed and corrected. They have received new booklets that they will be working on in class - once these ones have been completed, they too will return home for parent/guardian signature and correcting (I do encourage them to try to correct their mental math daily as it is still fresh in their minds!).

I hope everyone has had the chance to enjoy the gorgeous weather we had today!

Quick Update

It's been a while since we've had a post on the grade 3 blog!

The Grade 3s will be writing a grade 3 district Math exam in early June. In

preparation, we have been doing 12 daily mental math questions with the goal of completing all 12 questions as accurately as possible within 3 minutes. We have been working daily on these exercises for about 2 weeks now. Each day, we work hard at adding more strategies to our "plan of action" and the students have themselves seen their improvement and progress - keep up the good work!

In other news, we are still collecting some final items from the teachers of the school to send off to the teachers of Afghanistan. We hope to have the boxes shipped off this coming week.

I would also like to take this opportunity to say Thank you to those parents that helped out with Skating in February. This little note comes late, but you were definitely not forgotten! The students and myself greatly appreciated the help and it was wonderful to have so many adults come enjoy the ice time with us!

Just a friendly reminder that students should be getting their agendas signed each night. Homework is also due on Tuesdays - I have begun to send home "homework slips" if students have not passed in their homework or have incomplete work. Lastly, please prompt your child on their home reading - they should be spending at least 10-15 minutes each night reading aloud to someone at home. I have also reminded them that they need to be switching their books (and reading with me!) at LEAST once every two weeks.

Thank you for the continued support! Enjoy the wonderful weather to come this weekend!

Science Fair

Dear Parents,

Forest Hills School will be having a science fair for Grades 3-5 which will be due April 15th. This science fair will be optional for grades 3 and 4 and mandatory for grade five students. Since this is optional for grades three/four, we will not be allocating class time for students to work on their projects or displays. Children interested in participating may pick a topic at home, plan the science experiment and bring the project to school when it is completed.

All projects will be put on display April 17th in the school. Your child will also be responsible for putting it together on a "Fold Out Corrugated Presentation Board."

The outline of the experiment should contain the following parts:
1. My question
2. My hypothesis (what you think will happen)
3. Materials
4. Procedure
5. Observations
6. Results
7. Conclusion

Sincerely,

Forest Hills Grade 3-5 Team

Children of Conflict

Hello Grade 3 parents!

Last week, in preparation for the video, we talked to the children about why there is a war going on in Afghanistan, the meaning of being literate and the various degrees of poverty. This afternoon we watched a 30 minute video called "Children of Conflict" about the children of Afghanistan. A very quick but rich discussion followed. The children were able to identify the things that made them sad - not having enough food, not being able to attend school, not having the proper shoes to wear in the winter, having no toys, etc. and were also able to identify things that made them happy when they watched the video.

The intent was to not only teach the children about those that are less fortunate, but to talk to them about the WONDERFUL things that are happening to help those that are less fortunate. Additionally, we spoke about the things that we appreciate that not everyone is lucky enough to have. (It goes wonderfully with the appreciation statements the children share after a Tribes activity!)

1 1/2 boxes filled for Afghanistan! Thank you for the support!

Tuesday's Homework

Hi Everyone,

Report cards went home this afternoon. I spoke to the students about how the report cards only reflect 3 months of their lives and to not worry if they have not done as well as they would have liked this term - we have 3.5 more months of school to improve ourselves! They were also encouraged to continue to set high standards for themselves and to make sure that they are always trying their best.

As reading comprehension and writing continues to be an area of weakness for many of the students, I will be alternating writing and reading comprehension homework from now until the end of the school year. They will receive their first reading comprehension assignment tomorrow. It should not be very difficult for them as they have done similar exercises in class.

Supply Drive for Afghanistan

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that we will be holding a supply drive for the children of Afghanistan. Ask your child about it if they have not already given you the note. We've been talking about this in class and many of them are very enthusiastic to pitch in and help out.

We have talked about:
- How fortunate we are
- Not everyone is as fortunate as we are
- That although it is sad when we look at what little they have, there is a positive light to all of this: there ARE things happening out there that ARE good! Such as what we are doing.

In the coming weeks, we will be watching a video about the children of Afghanistan, discussing what it means to be global citizens, and reading books about diversity, peace and acceptable. We are also tying all of this in with the curriculum. The students will be weighing, measuring, counting, and sorting all the items we receive to get them ready for shipping.

It is very exciting to see how passionate they all are!
